Comfort Sensing
The Wisdom of the Body.
Sensing of Comfort and Discomfort / Sensus
Comfort Sensing
Essence: attentive hands-on maintenance of physical comfort and bodily ease in oneself and those nearby.
A continuous, fine-grained awareness of physical states - one's own and those of close others. The drive to establish and maintain comfort: the right temperature, the right fit, the right food, the right rest. The quiet insistence that the body's basic conditions be met, and met well.
Manifests as leisurely, sensuous, and tactile behavior.
Informational Level: sensory perception of the immediate present (tastes, smells, touches, fit of materials), tracking whether sensations intensify or fade, early detection of illness from barely perceptible first signals.
Social Level: caretaker of others' physical health, hands-on craftworker, finisher and polisher of work, host of comfort and pleasant shared environments.
Psychological Level: attentive bodily self-care as legitimate priority, non-striving present-moment contentment, active forgetting of time's passage, avoidance of anxiety and unpleasant thoughts, diminished inner verbal stream.
Physical Level: skin and mucous membranes, heightened tactile and gustatory sensitivity, soft, well-fed, relaxed and grounded body, posture maximally contacting its surface of support, smooth and unhurried movements.
This funciton seeks the golden mean in all physical things - food neither too salty nor too bland, clothing neither conspicuous nor neglected fitting well and breathing against the skin, a room neither too bright nor too dim. Always finding the right middle point, and then holding it. The function is therefore more conservative and stability-oriented than its sensory richness might suggest - disruption unwelcome because the whole balance must be rebuilt from scratch.
Extreme manifestations: overindulgence, smothering overcare, disruption avoidance, stagnation, exploitation vulnerability, valetudinarianism.
Craftsman (+): progressively refines physical conditions toward greater comfort and well-being. Attentive to the body's signals and oriented toward health, applying practical skill to reduce friction and improve the material environment. Values simplicity and moderation, but not as an endpoint - always moving toward something that works better and feels better. Unhurried and technically competent in this ongoing quiet optimization.
Bodily ease
Idyllist (−): highly attuned to bodily sensations and physical needs, with enhanced sensitivity to taste, touch, and smell. Oriented fundamentally toward eliminating discomfort - pleasure arises from the removal of what disturbs rather than from active pursuit. Notices subtle physical signals from the body and environment early and responds by restoring sensory ease and care for well-being.
