The Guardian

The ESI is the archetype of moral loyalty, the psyche organized around the protection of what it loves and the fierce, quiet maintenance of the ethical order that makes love possible. Where other types experience morality as abstract principle, for the ESI it is entirely concrete: these particular people, this particular community, these specific bonds of trust that must be honored because without them nothing else coheres. At their best, ESIs are pillars. They keep their word when it would be easy not to. They notice when someone in their circle is struggling before that person has asked for help. Their conservatism is protective: they know, from something deeper than analysis, how easily good things are destroyed and how long it takes to build them back. The trust people place in them is justified. The shadow is the contraction of the moral universe to the boundary of the in-group, and the transformation of protection into surveillance. The ESI's finely tuned threat-detection, which at healthy levels identifies danger early, can become a posture of permanent suspicion in which novelty itself is a threat and anyone outside the trusted circle is, by definition, suspect. Their conservatism, unchecked, becomes rigidity. Their loyalty becomes tribalism. Their moral seriousness becomes moralism. Their development requires them to find that the ethical principles they carry can be honored beyond the boundaries of their existing loyalties, that strangers, too, are worthy of the protection they extend to those they love.

The Gift

The capacity for a depth of fidelity and moral seriousness that provides real safety to those who depend on them.

The Wound

The fear that the world outside their careful circle is nothing but betrayal waiting to happen.
